Cover, Layout, & Realism Design

Disney: Marcy’s Journal - A Guide to Amphibia is a faithful recreation of the journal Marcy uses throughout Disney’s animated series, Amphibia.

Below is the full jacket cover for the hardcover edition!
(The font cover mockup was by Amy Huang. I took that and expanded it to a full cover design.
Read the full team credits at the bottom of this page.)

Below are the first seven pages of the interior.

Some of my responsibilities on this project included:

  1. Overall look and layout of the interior

  2. Realism elements, such as: Textures, stickers, stains, rips, etc.

  3. Detail work, such as: A.) Using kerning, rotation, and more to make the text appear genuinely handwritten, B.) If there is a hole in the paper, it will show what is on the other side, C.) Onboarding another designer in a way that their layout designs keep the same cohesive look as what has been established.

  4. Provided creative ideas that got implemented, such as: A.) Needing page 1 to be a “Belongs to:” page, B.) Including a flip-book animation, C.) Using a different set of stickers for Anne’s section of the book because she would not have the same stickers as Marcy.

  5. Full softcover, hardcover, and cover jacket designs (including spot-gloss files)

Below, I highlight some specific examples of the “realism elements” I put together.

My fellow creatives and I had a blast meeting fans! (I’m the one wearing orange.)
